Shachin High School began with a simple but urgent question from parents in and around Sararkona
village:
“Where will our children study after Grade Five?”
Although several government primary schools exists nearby, there was no
secondary school within about five kilometres. As a result, many children—especially girls—were
forced to stop their education at the end of primary school. The problem is even more severe
because this is haor (wetland) region: during the monsoon, children wait for boats and navigate
flooded land; in the dry season, they walk long distances over rough paths just to reach a
paved road.
To break this cycle, Shachin High School was established by the Shachin Charitable Foundation, created in memory of Shachindra Mohan Roy Chowdhury. The school began on
the founder’s own homestead land in Sararkona, with classes first held inside the residence while a
dedicated school building was planned on an adjacent plot. Today, the infrastructure includes multiple classrooms, a separate room for girls, a teachers’ room, and a head teacher’s
office—built step by step with community support and contributions from well-wishers.
The school and the Foundation honour the legacy of Shachindra Mohan Roy Chowdhury, who more than a century ago founded the first primary school in this area in the front yard of his home and personally supported it for decades. His commitment to rural education continues to inspire the vision and work of Shachin High School today.

Our mission is to provide a safe, welcoming, and high-quality secondary education for girls and boys from Sararkona and neighbouring villages, so that no child has to stop studying simply because there is no school nearby or because their family is poor.
Shachin High School is located in Sararkona village, Chamardani Union, Madhyanagar Upazila, Sunamganj District—a remote haor region of northeastern Bangladesh where life is shaped by water. During the monsoon, vast areas are flooded; in the dry season, cracked earth and muddy paths separate homes from the main road.
Within a five-kilometer radius, there is no other secondary school, even though several government primary schools operate nearby. As a result, many children—especially girls—have had no realistic option to continue their education beyond Class Five. This is not due to lack of ability or interest, but because the journey to existing high schools is too long, unsafe, or costly.
Shachin High School exists for these children: girls and boys from farming and day-labor households, first-generation learners, and students whose families dream of a better future but have had few opportunities themselves. Through the Shachin Charitable Foundation and the commitment of local families and well-wishers in Bangladesh and abroad, we work to keep the school close to home, affordable, and welcoming.
Most of our students are the first in their families to attend high school. They bring curiosity, resilience, and dreams of becoming teachers, nurses, engineers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. We see it as our responsibility to nurture those dreams, strengthen their skills, and help them believe that a different future is possible.
Behind them stands a dedicated team of teachers and staff, many of whom are themselves first-generation graduates. With support from the Shachin Charitable Foundation and the school’s managing committee, they focus on strong foundations in reading, writing, numeracy, and critical thinking, and on creating a school where students are known by name, encouraged to ask questions, and learn through discipline with dignity—not fear.
